Tori Kelly on Fighting Adult Acne, Basic Skin Care Products and Her “Secret Weapon” for Curly Hair
Singer, Songwriter, Record Producer, Actress: Tori Kelly does it all and looks gorgeous doing it. But music and cinema are not his only passions. I had the chance to chat with the star about her love for makeup and skincare, which has blossomed over the past decade in the limelight, and thanks to her close relationship with her favorite makeup artist Sarah Uslan. . Today, she is the muse of Uslan’s new LULA skincare line, which was inspired by the need for her famous clients (including Kelly) to have a clear, smooth canvas for makeup. Here, the Grammy winner talks about the new line, her favorite foundation for rash-prone skin and more.
Tell me about your friendship with Sarah. I love this makeup that brought you together.
âSarah and I have worked together for almost nine years, and she has done my makeup for so many important occasions in my life: from doing makeup on the day I won my first Grammy to being there to make me look and feel like feel like my best self on my wedding day. We have traveled the world together and been there for each other through the ups and downs. What has been so wonderful is building a creative relationship collaborative, where as I go through different phases of my life and career, she also meets me there to explore new makeup looks for this moment.
You mentioned that you have struggled with breakouts in the past. Is this why skin care has become such a high priority for you?
âI think like a lot of women, hormones were the root cause of the majority of my rashes. It can be frustrating trying to figure out how to fix hormone blemishes. So I worked with Sarah and my esthetician, Heather Nicole, to use light treatments and various other treatments, from microdermabrasion to peels. It was also heartwarming to know that Sarah was very conscientious about what makeup she would use on my skin and how careful she was to avoid products that could make me break out. Another achievement was that rather than stripping my skin of the oils and sending it into sebum overproduction mode, using the LULA Potion Serum ($ 125) helped balance the oils in my skin.
Apart from LULA, what other skin care products do you consider to be must-haves?
“I really like Tatcha The Dewy Skin Cream ($ 68) and Laneige Lip sleep masks ($ 22).”
What about foundation / concealer? I bet you are hesitant to use certain products if you are prone to rashes. What works best for you?
âWhen Sarah works with me, she is able to make me feel like I’m not wearing a heavy makeup mask. Part of this is the application, but part is the choice of the product. We often use CoverFX Power Play Foundation ($ 44), Cle de Peau Concealer ($ 73), and Laura Mercier Anti-Shine Pressed Powder ($ 49). In my everyday life, I really like using a Tom Ford Traceless Foundation Stick ($ 89) that Sarah gave me on her LULA Potion Serum.
What about hair care? Your curls are fabulous! Do you have a specific routine?
âI love trying new products and constantly experimenting with what works best on my hair, but the one thing I can never do without is my diffuser! It’s like the ultimate secret weapon for curly hair. I have also followed the Curly Girl Method to encourage the natural curl pattern in my hair. My curl had straightened out a bit from the heat and color, so now it’s getting more curly and healthier every day.
Are there any other beauty essentials you love right now?
âSarah kind of made me addicted to eyelashes after applying Lashify Lashes ($ 25) under my lashes for various shows and shoots. I loved how natural they looked and that they could open their eyes without using eyeliner. Now, I have become my own Lashify expert, playing with âlash mappingâ with different styles. “
What do you do to relax when you’re not playing or on the go?
âFitness challenges, great food, video games and quality time with my husband and our two dogs, Frodo and Dobby.â
What can your fans expect from you for the rest of the year?
âI’m currently working on new music that I can’t wait to share, and I can’t wait to be able to tour again. I am also very excited about the upcoming release of Sing 2 in theaters this Christmas!
