BrightSign, LLC®, the global market leader in digital signage media players, has announced that BrightSign readers are powering an interactive scent display at House of Rituals, Rituals’ new flagship store on Kalverstraat, Amsterdam. To launch the Talisman fragrance collection, a new market for House of Rituals, and to mark the brand’s 20th anniversary, Dutch audiovisual company First Impression has built an innovative fragrance display controlled by the players at BrightSign. Once a scent is selected based on customer input on an iPad, an LED light under the bottle is turned on. If the customer collects the glass pipette from the perfume bottle, a video is played describing the perfume. Fully personalized skin around BrightSign readers allows them to interact smoothly with iPads, and the app provides valuable marketing data that Rituals can act on.

Menno Huizinga, Senior Solutions Architect at First Impression, added, “First Impression was invited to the project to explore how audiovisual technology could enhance the brand experience and showcase the store’s fragrance line. The result is an interactive lab where customers can try Rituals products, providing data the brand can respond to. Time and effort wasted on technical issues has been a key point of anxiety in digital displays, but the reliability of BrightSign readers has been invaluable in providing an immersive, professional, and highly stable olfactory showcase.

Commenting on the display, Jeff Hastings, CEO of BrightSign, said, “We are delighted to bring such an innovative and customer-centric solution to Rituals. One of the key concepts of the experience store was to start selling perfumes, and Rituals wanted to enter that market in a very creative way. We’re excited to help them achieve this with a memorable and reliable display in the flagship store.

Customers can select a Rituals scent based on their preferred scent from an AV screen that links Rituals scent profiles to two databases. The customer is prompted to first enter their favorite scent on an iPad, and the system automatically finds the scent closest to the Rituals range. Another quiz invites customers to enter the basic ingredients they like (e.g .: white tea and blond sandalwood) and the app illuminates LED lights under all the perfume bottles lined up with that scent – reducing it to three possibilities a customer can then sample and buy.

Two BrightSign HD1024 readers control the function lighting. Through this, BrightSign players activate the LED strips under the bottles to draw customers’ attention to the scents selected by the app.

Additionally, First Impression gave House of Rituals a flexible and easy-to-access approach to managing their in-store brand experience through BrightSign’s BrightAuthor Connected and a custom store control app. With a single click, the content shown on the screens can be changed for the new season or for holidays, such as Christmas.

As the name suggests, the scent actually smells like marijuana. Well no really, but it’s the kind of smell that tickles your nose and smells good at the same time.

Imagined by perfumer Caroline Dumur, the goal of the perfume was to “put two worlds in parallel: the urban world through the design of its bottle created by Rei Kawakubo and the extrasensory world through its woody, spicy and airy aroma”.

With top notes of black pepper oil and cumin seed oil, a medium of hemp accord, mate abs, mastic abs and a base of guaiac wood oil, of frankincense resinoid and patchouli oil, the scent packs a punch.

Described as combining woody and herbaceous scents, the fragrance “promises us an escape and sensory stimulation”. This is not a lie, it is certainly unlike anything on the market today.

The 30ml perfume bottle is clear glass, with “GANJA” written in a black graffiti-inspired font on the front, and fits nicely on your bathroom shelves.

Unlike his elaborate, chameleon-like persona, superstar status, and oversized public presence, David Bowie in private was introspective, a dedicated self-taught and, as Iman said, an old-fashioned husband so spoiled by his domestic skills (“I make a nasty, nasty, nasty roast chicken”) that rarely after their marriage she had the opportunity to eat in restaurants.

By the time the two met, Iman had long since established a successful cosmetics company, Iman Cosmetics, specializing in skin products for people of color. And she had spent decades turning the putative glamor of a modeling career into personal fortune.

“I was not ‘lost’ to be discovered in a jungle,” Iman said with a howl of derision. “I have never been in a jungle in my life!

From their first meeting, Iman said, she and Mr Bowie recognized something rare and solid. The immediate emotional charge the musician spoke of when describing this early date was heightened by a shared belief that they had found each other soul mates, ready to build a partnership away from the celebrity circus.

“I know my identity and David knew his,” Iman said. “When we first met, we agreed to live life with purpose.”

“I didn’t really see anyone,” Iman said, except for her daughter and model agent and activist Bethann Hardison, a neighbor and old friend. Iman cooked. She took daily walks through the woods on her land, with her pristine mountain views. And she unexpectedly started building cairns.

In many cultures throughout history, people have stacked stones to mark paths, to dedicate sacred places, or as meditative acts. For Iman, building a cairn has become a daily way of doing all of these things while sorting through his memories.

“For me, the lockdown was good because in Manhattan there was no room to collapse,” she said. Strangers on the street would stop to offer their condolences, but then insist on taking selfies.

“In the woods, I could cry and release the sorrow,” she said. “By stacking the stones, I started to make a cairn every day. I began to live the memories more happily. And it slowly became less painful for me to see those beautiful sunsets that my husband loved without thinking, “I have to show this to David.”

It is therefore natural that by collaborating with the perfumers of Firmenich on the composition of Love Memoir, vetiver will be one of its most powerfully persistent notes.

“People have asked, ‘Do you plan to create another fragrance? “,” Iman said. “I have no idea and no intention. For me, it really came out of left field. It was a way for me to deal with my grief and come to terms with my memories.

At 1900m², this store is much larger than the 1150 other Rituals outlets around the world (which are typically 100m²) and is located in Kalverstraat, Amsterdam’s first shopping street. “One of the key concepts of the experience store was to start selling perfumes and Rituals wanted to enter that market in a very creative way,” said Menno, “We were invited into the project to explore how audiovisual technology could enhance the brand experience and enhance the store’s fragrance line.

In the latest House of Rituals experience store, the Talisman Collection of 25 scents spanning five fragrance families is the most notable display, powered by BrightSign gamers. Here, customers can select a Rituals fragrance based on their preferred scent in an AV screen that links Rituals fragrance profiles to two world famous databases.

Two customers can use the app at the same time, accessing it through iPads placed on the left and right of the screen. The customer is invited to enter their preferred perfume first and the system automatically finds the perfume closest to the Rituals range.

Another quiz prompts customers to enter the basic ingredients they like (e.g .: white tea and blond sandalwood) and the app lights up LED lights under all the perfume bottles lined up with that scent – reducing it to three. possibilities a customer can then sample and buy. Perfumes for the left iPad user are highlighted in green, the right in red. When a customer picks up a glass pipette from the screen, a video is played showing the fragrance ingredients and background information.

“The stunning display in the Talisman Collection is built around the innovative use of lighting to guide customer choice,” said Menno. “BrightSign readers were selected for their exceptional reliability and scalability. BrightSign provides customers with free lifetime operating system updates, but allows them to select the updates that are relevant to their installation. This keeps the hardware as up-to-date as First Impression and Rituals need it, without loading it with redundant features and functionality.

“Consumer devices such as PCs are forced to accept updates and security patches as they are released, which often bloates the software, so the device needs to more memory to function properly. As a result, PC drives often need to be replaced every three to four years, while BrightSign drives can be in service for eight to nine years or more. Additionally, power efficiency is designed into BrightSign drives which typically only consume 10-15W, compared to 70-80W for an even efficient PC. Lower heat output also reduces the need for cooling and improves reliability, as overheating can shorten the life of the drive.

To create the display, First Impression built a bridge between two different programming worlds. A development team of six programmers created a completely custom skin around BrightSign players, allowing players (running BrightSign OS) to interact smoothly with iPads (running iOS). This innovation extends BrightSign players beyond their normal functionality and took six months to develop. A local network connects BrightSign players to iPads and UDP commands are used to control the player.

The application also provides valuable purchasing data to Rituals, by detecting the most popular fragrance families with their customers. “Every choice a customer makes is recorded,” Menno said. “And the only personal information Rituals receives is the gender of the customer, but the store can use that data for marketing purposes. The display can link the options presented to the customer with what they ultimately bought, and can even show metrics on the most popular times and times of sale. Rituals can act on data entered by the customer to maximize return on sales.

As AV display maintenance can be a point of stress and wasted time in retail, First Impression offers Rituals a BrightSign-based BrightAuthor Connected monitoring service and a custom store monitoring application, ensuring that the experience is hardly ever disturbed. “In just a few seconds, First Impression Service is notified that one of the displays has an error and that it can be corrected before the customer notices it,” says Menno.

Due to the pandemic, the House of Rituals store has opened by appointment only with a strictly limited number. However, the technology has worked like clockwork. “Although the technology was developed for the flagship store, Rituals is so impressed with the concept that they want to roll it out in each of their high-end and flagship stores – taking the fragrance line around the world,” said Menno said.

First Impression also gave House of Rituals a flexible and easy-to-access approach to managing their in-store brand experience through a personalized store control system and app. “With a single click, the content on the screens can be changed for the new season, Christmas or Valentine’s Day,” said Menno.

Additionally, First Impression has created a custom plug-in to allow the BrightSign application to extract data from the store management system on which House of Rituals is running. “As a result, the screens automatically reflect store opening hours – going from half an hour after closing to half an hour before opening to switch to after hours content,” says Menno. . The screens can also be completely turned off. The app relies on data on the stack to ensure that the customer is only offered lines that are available in store on that day.

Light and sound are normally the key factors in audiovisual displays, but the Talisman collection shows how scent can also be smoothly integrated into an unforgettable in-store experience. Perfume is the juicy accessory that many of us can’t seem to live without. I have to admit, I’m a bit addicted to perfumes myself. It’s the only ornament that gives you full control and thousands of varieties to choose from. It’s the only improvement that doesn’t require surgery or tracking what you’ve eaten throughout the day. Truth be told, it’s an instant mood enhancer that somehow crashes into our memories, whether good or bad, like your wedding day or a bad breakup. There is so much power behind these sensory potions.

Unless you are the ultimate perfume connoisseur or have frequented the Institut de Parfumerie de Grasse in Grasse, on the lush French Riviera, you may never have wondered how or by whom your scents are created. You may only worry about smelling cotton candy on your 9-5 or having a spicy number to put on your next bumble date. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with it, but let’s talk about it.

Grasse is the most elite perfume school in the world. But to be fair, most people, especially minorities, don’t go to this niche school to become a perfumer. From the outside there is a kind of “you can’t sit with us” vibe. What I’m saying is that you won’t find much diversity in this area. Of course, we all buy perfume, but the most notable thing about the industry is that there are very few people of color, let alone perfumers. Why? When I think of perfumers, I tend to think of white fashion designers or maybe French men. I mean, what other examples have we had?

I’m not saying that no minority has been formed in Grasse, because there are a few that have. It’s just not common enough to hear about it. When was the last time you found out someone of color created your scent?

For change to occur within the industry, more minorities would need to learn the trade, whether by attending school or learning on their own. Chavalia Dunlap-M is an example of someone who chose to learn the art of perfume on their own.

Chavalia Dunlap-M, perfumer and founder of Pink MahogHany, was not present in Grasse. Instead, she went against the grain and decided to learn on her own how to make perfume right here in Longview, Texas, via Dallas.

Chavalia is part of a growing group of self-taught perfumers. She joins perfumers like Maya Njie and Nick Yeast who are also self-taught. Chavalia’s motivation to become a perfumer was triggered by the fact that she was not satisfied with the scents she used. She has noticed that her favorite scents often change without notice. Think about how McDonald’s fries were so good when we were kids, but then they changed them for us. The taste is different. Well, they do that with scents too. Odors often change or are reformulated. Crazy isn’t it? Chavalia was also concerned about allergens in perfumes. She wanted to create fragrances that were easier to wear without sacrificing gratification.

Chavalia started her work in 2006 by sampling raw materials and aromatic molecules. She then began to mix notes and materials with the Jean Carles method, named after a master perfumer still referenced today in perfume schools. She treats her mixing process like building a song.

“I am a musician by trade, classically trained and played by ear,” she said. “I mean, think about it. Songs have notes and chords, just like scents. It can be quite synonymous.

“When I create I try to think about what I want the start of the song to be or what I want the scent initialization to be on the skin or in the air if I create a piece with a spray. . “

Chavalia didn’t let not going to school stop her from making her dream come true. She nevertheless found a way to change the situation, indirectly paving the way for other BIPOCs. After familiarizing herself with materials and fragrance blends, she founded Pink MahogHany in 2011.

“Pink represents the feminine aspects of perfumery, softer flowers, musks, citrus fruits, things that speak of femininity in the field of perfume. Mahogany is more representative of the masculine aspect, the woods, the resins deeper and richer, you know a darker feel hence the name. But the two combined just mean I have scents for him and for her. This is why there is an additional “H” in mahogany.

Chavalia also likes subtlety. She believes that a good scent calls and an exceptional scent is whispering.

“I was a teacher before. I have been teaching in the public primary school system since 2006 and last year I threw the two out for good to pursue Pink MahogHany full time.

All of this paid off for Chavalia, naming her the first African-American woman perfumer in Texas. It’s huge and it’s an official flex. Flex on sister!

Not only does Chavalia create fragrances for her fragrance line, but she is often tasked with creating personalized or bespoke fragrances for clients, as well as creating fragrances for other companies. It can come in the form of candles, room spray, or whatever.
